片中最後查克的獨白，他提到: 他在荒島上，唯一能決定的，是他死的時間、方法和地點，他曾經做了一條繩子帶到山頂上，然後為了測試繩子夠不夠堅韌，他用了一塊木頭先試驗，結果代替他的木頭太重折斷了樹枝，所以他連選擇自己死的方式都不能。就在那時他體會到股暖暖的感覺，那種感覺要他繼續呼吸，於是他繼續呼吸，直到有一天，潮水為他飄來一個帆，於是他選擇到海上冒險，他回到曼菲斯，回到工作，卻發現4年前他讓自己相信已經失去的東西再度失去了，他的女友。但他知道他該如何做，他要繼續呼吸。

We both had done the math, and Kelly added it all up. She knew she had to let me go.
I added it up, knew that I'd lost her. 'Cause I was never gonna get off that island.

I was gonna die there, totally alone. I mean, I was gonna get sick or I was gonna get injured or something. The only choice I had, the only thing I could control... was when and how... and where that was gonna happen.

So... I made a rope. And I went up to the summit to hang myself. But I had to test it, you know? Of course. You know me. And the weight of the log... snapped the limb of the tree. So I couldn't even kill myself the way I wanted to.

I had power over nothing. And that's when this feeling came over me like a warm blanket. I knew somehow that I had to stay alive. I had to keep breathing, even though there was no reason to hope. And all my logic said that I would never see this place again. So that's what I did. I stayed alive. I kept breathing.

And then one day that logic was proven all wrong, because the tide came in, gave me a sail. And now, here I am. I'm back in Memphis, talking to you. I have ice in my glass. And I've lost her all over again. I'm so sad that I don't have Kelly. But I'm so grateful that she was with me on that island.
